Website or social media first? How to decide
4 min read · 12 October 2026
Most small business owners know they need both a website and social media. The real question is which one to do first, because budget and time are limited. The good news is that the answer is not a matter of opinion. It depends on how your customers find businesses like yours, and you can work that out in ten minutes.
Start with your last five customers
Think of the last five customers who came to you, and ask how each one first heard about you. Write the answers down. You will usually see one of three patterns.
- They searched. They typed something like "dentist near me" or "CA in Vijayawada" into Google, found you, and called.
- They scrolled. They saw your post or reel, or a friend shared it, and messaged you on Instagram or WhatsApp.
- They were referred. Someone told them about you, and they looked you up before contacting you.
If you do not know, start asking every new customer "How did you hear about us?" from today. It is the most useful question in marketing.
A simple rule
If customers search for what you sell, start with a website. People who search already want what you offer. They are comparing options and want to see your services, prices, location, timings and reviews. A clear website, together with a Google Business Profile, is what turns that search into a phone call. Clinics, lawyers, accountants, repair services, schools and most local services fit here.
If customers discover you by browsing, start with social media. Some products are bought because people see them, not because they search for them: clothes, food, home decor, gifts, beauty and fitness. For these, regular posts and reels on Instagram and Facebook bring the first customers. You still need one simple page to send people to, with your products, prices and a WhatsApp button.
If you sell to other businesses, start with a website. Business buyers check you out carefully before they reply. A professional website with your services, past work and contact details builds trust, and LinkedIn comes next.
If most of your customers come from referrals, start with a website. A referred customer almost always looks you up before calling. If they find nothing, or an old Facebook page, you lose some of them. A simple, professional website protects the referrals you already get.
Why "both" usually ends up being the answer
Websites and social media do different jobs, and they work best together.
- Social media is good at being seen: it puts you in front of people who were not looking for you.
- A website is good at being chosen: it gives people the details they need to decide, and it works for you around the clock, even when you are not posting.
- Social media posts disappear from people's feeds within days. A website page keeps bringing visitors from Google for years.
- Your social media profile can send people to your website, and your website can show your latest posts.
So the real decision is the order, not a choice of one. Most businesses that start with one add the other within six months.
What each one costs to start
At LN Web Solutions a business website starts from ₹8,000 before GST, paid once, plus yearly renewals for the domain and hosting. Social media management starts from ₹5,000 a month before GST, because it is ongoing work: planning, designing posts, writing captions and replying to comments.
That difference matters when budget is tight. A website is a one-time cost that keeps working, while social media is a monthly commitment that only works if it is kept up. If you can only do one thing well this month, a good website and a free Google Business Profile are usually the safer start for search-led businesses, and a few months of consistent posting is the better start for browse-led ones.
The three mistakes to avoid
- Starting social media and stopping after a month. An abandoned profile looks worse than none. Only start if you can keep it up, or have someone do it for you.
- A website with no way to contact you. Every page should make it easy to call, WhatsApp or send an enquiry.
- Not knowing what works. Ask every new customer how they found you, and look at the numbers once a month.
